Alacritous ...... in & around Mysore
An impulsive decision while we pamper ourself at Bangalore club , a prompt one night booking at JP Fortune , and we are off early morning for Mysore. With just a day and half in hand, it shall be a whirlwind of revisiting the few places we had visited as school kids. Since we were told one day is enough for Mysore, Plan was simple, visit Chamundi hill, Mysore Palace and Brindavan Gardens, head back to Bangalore the next morning. Are we cutting this visit short, we shall find out soon enough.
Bouganvilla's add colour, while the Coconut, Sugarcane and Banana plantations add motifs of green. Too early in the morning for KFC, coffee and sandwitch at CCD it is ! Nearing Mysore, few interesting ruins come to view, which the driver mentions is Srirangapatna , Tipu Sultan's Palace. Curiosity cannot be indulged now, however , we decide to explore it the next day. He then mentions, the Golden Temple at Bylakuppe. We are like...... Golden temple, what are you talking about , thats at Amritsar. He gives clarity by saying , there is a Buddha idol, made in Gold, as is the temple, very beautiful and we should go there since its about an hour distance. The Golden Buddha bekons us, and we decide to take a detour. About 45mins drive , driver says its still another hour drive. Not knowing exactly how far, and what to expect, we do an about turn. We realize time has been lost however, we definetely do not want to miss out on our planned Mysore visits!
We take in the beauty of the flowering tree's strewn on the spiraling roads of Chamudi hills. Chamundeshwari temple, to pay obeisance to this Shakti Peeth, and the significance of the gigantic Mahisasura will not escape you. The thin lane to the temple is vibrant with stalls selling the most myriad of articles,.the beauty of the temple, the idols shall not escape you. The long line is daunting, short of time as we are, ask around and we are told to go to the counter and buy tickets , which will get us to the main idol in no time. We do that, to the main temple, however, we are knocked off on the entrance ( literally) by the throngs of people , who accumulate from 2 other directions. A little management get us inside to an exalted Darshan. Skip the gigantic Nandi and the second temple for another time!
Hunger pangs withstanding, and the heat killing us, we decide on a quick dekho of Mysore Palace. Its absolutely stunning. Breathtaking in the beauty of architecture ( blending the Hindu, Muslim and Gothic contours) , the colours of the palace , the temples and the gardens. Its a zip zap zoom tour of the palace. The driver of the battery operated cart double's as a guide. What does catch my interest is the his pointing out the idols of Hindu Gods infused within the designs of a Cathedral and Mosque, in the centre structure of the palace. We couldn't see it , rushed as we were....... next time i shall make a note and take a picture of who they are too! The walk through the Durbar halls totally mesmerize us, with the artifacts, paintings , carvings, dazzling colour schemes. Oh boy..... wish we had 2-3 hours with us, to truly appreciate this palace.
Ready as we are to die of the heat and hunger.... the driver loses his way and a 2 minute takes 15 minutes for us to reach JP Forture, a beautiful property. The staff is super efficient , we are checked in, baggages sent to our room, while we sit at the restaurant and enjoy Trunch( its a combination of Tea and Lunch afterall), of the most delicious chicken and meat dish. Rest tad and off we are to Brindavan gardens.
Brindavan is every bit as I remembered it. The flowers where Bouganvilla's reign, the cascading water , the distinct fountains, the pond ...... the transition of the entire garden luminating as night steps in..... Bollywood can still do a song and dance number here!
We are all set to head back to Bangalore after our Salaam Dua to Tipu Sultan. However , plans change, when we get calls from Aunt who insists we visit the Golden Temple. Heeding her advise, its a clueless 2 hour drive towards Coorg for the temple.
The golden rooftop of the temple, flaming with the rays of the sun welcomes us to Bylakuppe, as do the locals on the street, it feels like we have reached Dharamshala! We drive past a few beautiful intricate gates( which we learn later are entrance to the other monateries and nunneries of the first and largest tibetan settlement in India) , to stop at the entrance of the Nyingmapa Monastery. Stepping inside the courtyard transports us to another world. The stillness, the quite energy resonates, muting the activities in the couryard. Walking past the monks residential quarters, we are blown away by the sheer radiance of the temple that comes to view, the striking potrait of HH Pema Norbu Rinpoche, embracing all to be a part of the the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, thriving with the blessings of HH Dalai Lama! This temple is shut , so we walk across the beautiful landscaped gardens , watching Monks of all ages going about their chores. A large Gong, highlighted atop a solidary room, a monk kindling the extinquished Diya's lined symmetrically in many rows , is a delight. The Golden Buddha, in the main temple is an eye opener. Expecting one large golden Buddha, we are stupified by 3 mammoth gold statues of Buddha,Padmasambhava, and Amitayus. The shimmering gold, white, red and green cloths drapped in front of idols, the altar decorated with so much more than just flowers and incense sticks, colorful paintings and carvings on walls and pillars, pictures of the gurus, the motley of musical instrument ( the jumbo Conch standsout!), scriptures and beads on individual desk, await the monks for prayers. Not allowed inside till the prayers are over, with just one ( of the 3 ) grand door open, we are laconic witness to the halcyonic ambience. While the sparrrows play hide and seek within and outside the prayer hall , Monks, disciples of varied ages enter the temples. The temple that was shut is open, we step in , the hall a mini replica of the main temple filing up with the young monks, except that there are 7 majestic Golden idols of various God and Goddess. A young monk serves tea and the prayers begin. We sit in reverence , immersed in the purity of the hymns. Its difficult to break free from the grip of this serenity. However, we have to and we visit the third temple, dedicated to Goddess Tara and her divine forms. The chants , sounds of the instruments from the 3 temples resonate the entire monastery. Murals , lustrous paintings on walls are integral to the temples. The opulence of this Monastery is breathtaking as is the tranquility.
More than half a day and still so much that we have not explored, experienced, we should have stayed a night here. The colourful prayer flags bid us adieu , with a silent invitation , when many questions shall have an answer on the monastery, settlement.... relish the food and so much more!

We cross an absolutely stunning imposing medieval architectural style Cathedral. Its stained glass windows are a display in the sun light.....St.Philomina......as always, for next time !
Just about 20 kms from Mysore towards Bylakuppe, 2 villages diagonally opposite, similiar in their design , construction.... merging with the landscape was invitation enough to swing the wheels for a cuppa coffee with a resident there........ that did not happen, but will someday !
Grace sure was working, Devi temple shuts between 2pm to 3.30 pm. Had we reached during this time, our entire day would have been disrupted!
And some ....
Give the musical fountain at Brindavan gardens a skip & Royal Orchid for chai instead, overlooking the Dam and Garden.
Mysore Palace, had we known we would have planned such that we saw the sound and light show in the evening ...and the Sunday spectacular illumination of the entire palace.
Google time ......

Nairobi , a glimpse !
Watching the sun rise , a cuppa chai , with Mount Kenya looming to greet you!
The Masai Market , just outside The Village Market was visual delight with an array of amazing local artefact. A slow paced time , soaking in the energy of this place , the hard core bargaining and the buying , was super fun.

Beachbums at Menorca from 21Sept to 27 Sept 2011.
From googling about the island , to some very useful and sound advice from Narayan Moorthy ( buddy of Subhro , a Dalian ! ) , on ,where to stay , where to go and what to do , we were all geared for a week of quiescence. As per Narayan's advice , Fenu's hit in the dark for a self catering apartment complex at south Menorca ,meant bookings at Apartmentos Siesta Playa at the southern western tip of the island. South is ideal with its soft sandy beaches vis a vis the cooler rugged beaches of North , windy and ideal for wind surfing & sailing.
Three musketeers aka Fenu, Mom & I , on skedaddle from the hubbub of London. Through the most impressive drive from Mao/ Mahon, eastern end of the island to the southern most, we reach Seista Playa and are pleasantly relieved to find this property right on one of the islands small beach front, the man made marina less than a stone's throw away, and the bus stop, a well stocked supermarket, bang opposite. This place was as ideal as it can get with one walking out of the pool and into the salty crystal clear water of the Mediterranean sea .... stupendous .
This 60km x 15 km approx ,varied in its terrain island can be driven around in a day. However , we take it at a very lazed pace. One has to love walking to appreciate the diversity that each town has to offer. A delight of walking along the shoreline ( all of 216 kms!! ) , the bylanes of every town, of discovering secluded cove's. Picnic basket always ready, a book, and music...... there is no telling where you will want to stop.
If the mornings were dedicated to swimming and walking on the beach , the evenings were zealously meant for the hot spots of the marina. Every town we visited was the same, marina would come alive with stalls selling locally made craft, people who were ready to do Tattoos, hair braiding and what not ......... and the small bars and restaurants dotted all across the marina.
Our first experience on the pristine , turquoise untouched coastline and beaches of Menorca was on Amigo's boat ride, who showed us the entire southern stretch. Then it was for us to drive , take a boat, walk or canoe( which we didn't!! ) to the stunning beauties of Son Saura, Cala en Turgueta, Cala Macarella, Cala Macarelleta, Cala Galdanda,Cala Mitjana, Trebaluger and Cala Fustam. If we hadn't stayed at Cala en Bosch , we would have stayed at Cala Galdana, with accessibility to so many more beaches and the option of staying in the bustling beach / harbour or as Narayan had stayed , away from the maddening crowd at the towns higher grounds! Most of these beaches have no facilities , go prepared. You want to stay in the South , then its either Cala en Bosch or Cala Galdana.
Its two days of adventure for us. First being our trip from Cala en Bosch to the two main towns of Ciutadella & Mao by Bus, being a part of the locals! What an enchanting day it was ! Ciutadella with its quaint historic and artistic charm. We made sure there wasn't an inch that we haven't missed , which included peeping into some windows and nearly walking into someones home and asking them if we could join them for a meal. The lanes are so narrow , that one can very easily exchange stuff from opposite homes! The Cathedrals , the Main square, harbour ... a complete delight. On the other hand , Mao has this lovely balance of the old colonial charm with the modernization of today's times. A quick stop at the information office and we take the Yellow catamaran tour , and then get onto this really cute caterpillar like Mao express train , hopping on & off from its various stops , which helps us see this entire city fairly comprehensively!
We also want to drive , so, next day, hire a car it is for a day. Take off for the most spectacular drive from south to north. Our first stop is Alaior, since we do not want to miss the Menorcan purebreed, Horse Fiesta ( highly recommended by the information office at Ciutadella). And we are so glad we didn't, this is one fiesta i would have hated to miss. While the horse riders and the horses are all in finery, showing off their skills , and the village band belting out music, the main attraction is to make sure that the rider manages to balance his/her horse on the hinds for the longest time , with the children giving a helping hand by supporting the horse to hold as long as possible. The rider and horse who accomplishes this is declared the winner, and the smiler being ... the best riders that day were girls!!!!! Very very exciting this was. From there we go on a wild drive through some really bad patches to Cala Coves. The drive and then the long walk , we could have well given this a miss! Tired and not in the best of spirits we take off to Cova den Xorio nightclub. One look around this place, a drink and all our tiredness evaporates , if only we had planned better we would have been able to spend an evening here! Energies back , we hit the winding road towards Menorca's highest point El Toro( Monte Toro) at Es Mercadal, where the statue of Jesus showers blessings on the entire island! Its towards our last stop , Fornells, that we drive to. This tiny northern most fishing village, with the best sea food, that this entire island can offer! This is the paradisiacal stop before we head back to Cala en Bosch!
A week at Menorca has been all about doing nothing and some! J
Highlights
Missed out on having a cuppa coffee at Cap d'Artrutx, the light house converted to a Cafe at Cala en Bosch .... hummmm ... kuch toh next time ke liye I have to keep!
Swimming with the tiny fish as companions, or snorkelling to give them a name was not Fenu's scene who can eat anything that lives underwater , but will absolutely not swim with these creepy crawlies!!!! Ha ha ha
Walking on the rocks and suddenly having a lizard slide past, ewwwwww , was not something that we enjoyed .... they sure camouflage themselves well , these symbols of Menorca , managing to capture the imagination through logos, souvenirs and amazing variety of gift articles with them taking the centre stage! With wee bit place for the Menorcan leather shoes, for which this island is famous!
Scuba diving went kaput for me , all coz I had to train in the resort swimming pool .... next time , its will be a Villa that I stay at , and learn to scuba in the privacy of my own pool!
Pigged out on icecreams, cheese n wine, Paella, caldeseta da langosta ( lobster stew), sea food platter at El Pascador & Piccola, and the most amazing Italian fare with a view of the harbour to boot at Capriccio Italiano, drowning it with pitchers of Sangria and after dinner shots of Hierbas, the local liquer! Ummmmm ... happinessssssssangriaaaaaa!! ;-)
To be mistaken for a local by a tourist , asking me for direction in broken Spanish , sure gave me a kick!
Took me a day to realize that the hedges around most properties and homes were Olive bushes and so many of these tree's were also laden with olives, I thought they were some kind of local wild berries ... am i blind or wot?! ... ooooook , don't answer that!
Gosh, what a fright we got when this enna rascalla horse, at the Horse Fiesta, decided to run amok and head straight for the onlookers , and very nearly trampled me ! phewwww ..... i still live to tell this tale!!! J
And some .......
No can drink tap water , as one would in other European countries, the water is salty ( unless you want nimbu paani by adding some lemon juice!ahem), one has no choice but to buy mineral water..... and then again , one can survive on wines and pitchers of Sangria!
This entire island is asleep by 11 pm , amazing !
First visit should be the information office at Ciutadella or Mao, and gather as much information and booklets on what festivals are on , where to go and what to see , pick up as many brochures and then decide for yourself , kaise kya karna hai! Coz thts exactly what we did!
Google time maybe!!

Weekend at Wales! 19-21 Aug 2011
A surprise weekend at Cardiff , South Wales. The drive from London to Cardiff has to have a coffee break, else Bapi M 's car will not move! J However we end up with coffee and a happy KFC break. Second Severn Crossing , bridge over River Severn , reminds me of Bandra Sea Link, can't help but see a bit of Bombay wherever i go ! Croeso to Caerdydd aka Welcome to Cardiff! Welsh sure is a bhery phunny language , humare baas ke bahar. The way they pronounce and write , is perplexing.... Celtic languages ke kya kehne, i say !
Arrive at the Novotel , check in , grab a city map and off we are for a drive through town towards Mermaid Quay, overlooking the Cardiff Bay . A stop at Wales Millennium Centre, locally called "The Armadillo". The theatre has 'Swan Lake' playing , wish we could have watched it ! However it does not stop us from having a cuppa coffee and browsing the shops! It sure is a proper art centre , giving Cardiff a complete Cultural high! Then a walk across the Roald Dahl Pass to get to the quay!
Mermaid Quay , the atmosphere is here! Buzzing with activity ! Perfect ! Cardiff comes here to party!
We are welcomed on the waterfront by the statue of Ivor Novello , composer , actor , and a whole lot more, who watches the people swing on the Twister , some ride this is ! Various sculptures adorn the length of the Bay. The sunset is a perfect backdrop to the entire Quay ! Its a place to relax , to party , to shake a leg ..... ideal evening getaway! We have a drink , soak in the energy ! Enjoy a meal, which takes us forever to decide coz of the multiple choices of restaurants, and browse through some of the shops! A delightful evening bids good night, not before we shake a leg to the band thats playing at the front.
Saturday morning, we head straight to the fitness Centre .... Swim, Sauna,Jacuzzi .... the day is all set to begin! Its hearty breakfast at the City Centre, with the entire milieu filled with a flamboyant look of Red & the sporadic green colour! Its a football match between Wales & Argentina, with the Home team all geared up for a Victory & the Fans all set for Celebrations!
While the Wales supporters move towards the Millennium Stadium, we walk. Walking through the high street area, we sample some local wines, walk towards River Taff, giving Cardiff Castle a miss, since we are short of time. We walk through Animal Gate, part of the castle while admiring the Castle's ornate Clock Tower, to the Bute Gardens. Make a stopover at The Old Library, the cute pub for a drink and watch Wales win the match. Walking back towards the car, we have to stand in a corner allowing the throngs of happy, boisterous crowd leave the stadium, to either go home or celebrate at the pubs with mugs of Beer! Evening we relax at the hotel and I drink the most Divine Mojito & Irish Coffee ... full credit to the Bartender, sahi drink after a long time !:-)
Sunday begin with an early check out, a drive around the city towards Barry Island. Less than an hour and we are at this small but quaint sandy beach island! Its reverberating with activity , the kids on the pleasure park, families chilling out at the beach , swimming , the works, activity all around ! A scenic walk from the main area to one of the tips of this island , to watch the beach from the opposite side has its own beauty! And is interesting to bump into various groups of Indian tourist , who i would presume have come from London and a few from India. We had half a mind of sitting down with a group of them who had opened up their picnic petara with all kind of desi goodies!
But there was no ways one was killing ones appetite coz we had driven all the way here to sample & pig out at Boofy's for the bestest tastiest ever, Fish & Chips with mushy peas! Yummmmmm ...... absolute and pure happiness!
Now we can exultantly head back to London !
